AMOA's first Webinar addresses legislative issues:
The Amusement and Music Operators Association (AMOA) hosted its first Webinar this afternoon for the associations' Board of Directors and Political Action Committee (PAC) donors. The Webinar was titled, "Legislative Outlook and Agenda 2010," and was conducted by Mike Zolandz, Partner in Sonnenschein, Nath and Rosenthal of Washington, D.C., Legislative Counsel for both AMOA and the American Amusement Machine Association (AAMA).
The discussion focused on politics, product safety, elections, currency, video game content, intellectual property enforcement, politics, trade, health care reform, taxation; state budgets, smoking bans, the estate tax, and imports, among other topics.
Gary Brewer, President of the AMOA, welcomed everyone participating at the start of the Webinar and said, "Legislative issues are what created AMOA in 1948, and they remain a key part of what we do today." In addition, he invited every participant to support the industry and attend the AAMA/AMOA Amusement Expo, March 10-12 in Las Vegas.
Zolandz said, "We're looking at the aftermath of the recent State of the Union Address by the President, which was in part a reaction to the special election in Massachusetts. We're in the throes of an election season. Partisanship will be the order of the day."
He advised that Congress will be in session for a short period, and will adjourn early to allow time for campaigning. Zolandz pointed out the importance of taking advantage of opportunities to connect with legislators when they campaign at home, and express the concerns of small businesses in our industry. He said, "Everyone must be proactive and diligent in their efforts to protect our industry any way they possibly can." Look for a full report on the Webinar in the March issue of

Namco America and Namco Europe debut Gamewax's new "Digital Toy Hybrid Racer" Go Go Grand
Prix: Namco America Inc. and Namco Europe Ltd. debuted Gamewax's new "Digital toy Hybrid Racer" Go Go Grand Prix at the European Amusement and Gaming Expo (EAG) in London last week. The game drew attendees who gathered around to watch and cheer on players who competed in this simple four-player slot car racer.
The four-player game is designed to appeal to families and children of all ages. It can be operated in four modes: general amusement, customizable tournament, midway-style redemption, and regular redemption.
Similar to slot car racing, the 1:32 scale cars travel on a special playfield that is flat with a groove that runs down the middle. Metal strips on either side of the groove help provide power to the slot cars as they speed along the winding track. The amount of pressure applied to the trigger in the hand controller determines the speed of the slot car. However, if a player approaches a turn too quickly, the car will slide out slightly and brake while giving the hand controller a vibrating buzz from the "G-Force" motor. This alerts the player that the speed should be decreased when approaching this turn the next time around. Unlike traditional slot cars, the cars in this game do not come off the tracks, which means the machine can be operated without an attendant free.
The game will be distributed across North America and Europe exclusively by Bandai-Namco and Brent. Namco America will showcase this new game at the 2010 AAMA/AMOA Amusement Expo, March 10-12 in Las Vegas. For more information, visit (www.namcoamerica.com).

areas that want to opt-out of video gaming in the state:
Municipalities or counties that wish to opt out of the recently passed Video
Gaming Act in Illinois may face a surcharge if an amendment to the Video Gaming
Act proposed by Sen. Mike Jacobs goes through. A synopsis of the status of Bill
SB2816 states: "If a municipality or county prohibits video gaming pursuant
to the Act, then the Board, with the cooperation of the Department of Revenue,

municipality or county not prohibited video gaming, which shall be based on the
maximum amount of machines that may be located within the municipality or
county." The bill also "Provides that, if a municipality or county
fails to remit the surcharge, then the amount of the monthly surcharge shall be

LAI Games reports success at EAG:
LAI Games reports that it had a great response to its new games line-up at the
EAG show last week. According to the company, the new Snapshot fun photo kiosk
and Little Masterpiece touch-screen coloring game for kids were a huge success,
and that a number of major orders were taken at the show. LAI Games also
released its updated version of Textminator featuring a new remote networked
tournament mode, which takes Textminator to another level with online prizes and
exciting regional and national competitions. LAI Games' CEO Alan Freimuth said,
"The response to Snapshot was phenomenal; it really stirred the creative
juices of visitors to the show who took over 1,000 photos (see a selection at www.thefotos.net).
This is a great multi-function kiosk for any venue, and is a 'must' for any
operator's game mix." Freimuth added, "We're using the same photo
technology for our new version of Little Masterpiece and we've received great
feedback from our customers who appreciate the new small foot-print and the
facility to include custom promotional messages. But the real 'killer benefit'
with both Snapshot and Little Masterpiece is that we give control on media costs
back to the operator. Low cost media can be bought easily from a variety of
retailers--there is no tie-in to expensive media--giving the operator enhanced
profits. We also received a particularly pleasing response to the new U.K.
Tournament Version of Textminator. This version will appeal more to the 'wired
generation,' and with online prizes for the fastest texter, a real buzz is
beginning to build around this game!" For more information, visit (www.LAIGames.com).

Industry mourns passing of Sol Lipkin: Sol Lipkin approached his long life with good humor and a positive attitude. Sol was just two months shy of his 104th birthday when he passed away on Jan. 21 at an assisted living facility in Fanwood, N.J., where family and friends visited often. Sol remained active in the industry until age 101. Sol is survived by two sons: Bruce of UVM Inc., and Gene of Benchmark Games; two grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Jan. 27 at the Menorah Chapels of Millburn, 2950 Vaux Hall Road, Union, N.J., at 3 p.m. (908-964-1500). Family and relatives will be receiving before the memorial service. After the service, family will be sitting at the home of Bruce
Lipkin, 3 Conger Way, Clark, N.J., Jan. 27-29.
As an infant, Sol came to the U.S. from England with his Latvian-born parents, Joseph and Sophia. Sol was called the "Father of Shuffleboard," and with good reason. He loved the coin machine industry he entered in 1934 at the National Shuffleboard Co. Sol's early coin-op career was interrupted by World War II. In 1942 he joined the U.S. Navy, and as a member of the SeaBees spent 20 months in Iceland building airfields. His contagious love of shuffleboard spread to others in the military, and stayed with them after the war. He nurtured and guided shuffleboard for the rest of his life. The same year he celebrated his 90th birthday, he was inducted into the National Shuffleboard Hall of Fame.
With Sol as a role model, it was easy to distill the secret to a long life: Work hard, maintain a positive attitude, respect your fellow man, and don't let age get in the way of living life to the fullest. The coin machine industry was blessed to have him.

ICE to debut two new games at EAG Expo: Innovative Concepts in Entertainment Inc. (ICE) is set to debut two new games-- Robin Hood and Rok
n' Bloks--at the EAG Show in London next week. These brand-new games will be on exhibit at the Brent Sales/Bandai Namco (Booth # 530), and Sega Amusements Europe Ltd. (Booth #1060).
Robin Hood
Players travel back in time in this new, medieval-themed video redemption game, and test their archery skills. ICE teamed up with GameWax to make this game, which features a durable, laminated plywood cabinet with a 32-inch, horizontally mounted LCD screen. The animated theme makes this game suitable for all ages. Players test their skills in this multi-round archery game, firing the realistic-looking crossbow at various moving targets to win tickets.
Once players have completed the first round, they have the option to risk half of their tickets and show their sharpened skills by entering the Super Bonus Round to win the ticket jackpot.
Rok n' Bloks
This 3-D, interactive video redemption game combines Real Time Physics with Rok n' Blocks. Rok n' Bloks uses next generation technology that allows the player to use an interactive hand controller to move the base side to side. Players are also allowed to tilt the base to catch and balance falling
Bloks.
The bright, 42-inch LCD monitor and vibrant LED lights draw in players to test their skills at hitting the various win zones, which is accomplished by stacking and balancing the falling
Bloks. Each win zone rewards the player with tickets and--if the player is skilled enough-- they can win the bonus by stacking their Bloks all the way to the Bonus win zone. But be careful, dropping three Bloks will end the game. Stay tuned for release date on this latest collaboration between Play Mechanix and ICE.
For more information on these two new games, contact ICE at (716)759-0370; e-mail

United Distributing Co. to offer GalacTix in Europe: Betson Enterprises has reached an exclusive distribution agreement with United Distributing Co, which will allow United to market and sell the newly released GalacTix by Chicago Gaming Co. exclusively in the U.K. and on a non-exclusive basis in other parts of Europe.
Michael Green, Sales director of United, said, "We are delighted to have been granted this distributorship of GalacTix in Europe.
GalacTix, in our opinion, was the hit of the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions
(IAAPA) Expo 2009, and was the only redemption machine that had the 'WOW' factor. We are looking forward to displaying this game at the EAG Expo (in London next week), and are confident it will draw the same praise from operators as it did at
IAAPA."
Green continued, "GalacTix is clearly a well thought out machine and it shows in its development, originality, and presentation. We believe that GalacTix is going to be a smash hit in our market, and we are very confident that its earning potential will make it a number one game."
According to Betson, test reports from a Midwestern location in the U.S. have been very strong, with GalacTix consistently finishing near the top in earnings during its first five weeks. Chicago Gaming continues to make improvements to the game, and promises that the finished product will be ready to take revenues to an even higher level. Incredible Technologies supports AAMA/AMOA Amusement Expo:
Incredible Technologies Inc. (IT) is fully supporting the upcoming AAMA/AMOA
Amusement Expo, set for March 10-12 in Las Vegas. This is the first amusement
industry spring show that IT has attended in eight years. IT was the first
manufacturer to ask the associations to consider conducting a single show rather
than two shows each year. The company will exhibit its entire line of amusement
games at the show.
David Cohen, Chairman of AAMA, said, "As a successful manufacturer within
the industry, IT has been an advocate for the production of a
one-trade-show-a-year format for the coin-op industry. As other prominent
manufacturers echoed IT's vision, the associations heard their concerns, and
have adeptly answered. Both parties have worked diligently to make this new show
a reality. On behalf of the AAMA, we appreciate IT's support, and look forward
to seeing them at the world premier of the Amusement Expo."
Gary Brewer, President of AMOA, said, "On behalf of AMOA and the industry's
operator community, we are delighted that IT is planning to actively participate
in the inaugural Amusement Expo this spring. It is entering its 25th year, and
what better way for such an industry leader to mark that milestone than to have
a strong presence at the industry's leading show? IT has always been one of our
shining stars at our fall shows in the past, and we look forward to them
continuing to be a highlight of our new industry show this March."

A&A issues statement regarding cadmium:
A&A Global Industries sent a message to its customers and the press,
explaining the company's stance on cadmium in children's products. The statement
is as follows:
"Recently there have been a number of stories about cadmium, a potentially
hazardous substance found in children's jewelry. Cadmium is a heavy metal,
similar to lead, which is a known carcinogen, and if ingested by children, can
cause developmental problems. The attention focused on this substance was
because of alarmingly high concentrations found in children's jewelry sold at
retail and not in any bulk vending machines.
Federal regulations have always restricted levels of cadmium in the surface
coating (paint), but not on the substrate (the actual material of the product).
A&A has always tested for cadmium in the surface coatings and our products
meet or exceed the regulations. Regarding the substrate, manufacturers are not
required to test for cadmium because, unlike lead, there is no standard by which
to test to. We believe that in the coming weeks or months the Consumer Product
Safety Commission (CPSC) will issue guidance regarding cadmium and other
elements in substrates, and we will then be able to test to those standards.
In the meantime, we are being proactive to assure you that the products you buy
from us are safe. All of our metal products are being tested for cadmium and the
results indicate that they contain on average less than 300-parts per million (ppm)--the
same allowance as lead. A&A's products are indeed safe, and you can sell
them with confidence.
A&A will continue to keep you informed as the situation develops so that you
can not only understand the upcoming regulations regarding cadmium, but will be
able to explain it to your locations as questions may arise."
For more information, call A&A Global Industries, (800) 638-6000; e-mail (contact@aaglobalind.com).

NBVA brings attention to reports on cadmium in children's
metal jewelry: the National Bulk Vending Association (NBVA)
has issued a notice from NBVA Counsel, Quin Dodd, regarding a recent Associated
Press (AP) investigative report on the presence of cadmium in children's metal
jewelry and possibly other products.
According to the NBVA newsletter, "This report generated much buzz in the
consumer product safety arena and multiple questions from the NBVA membership.
While the metal charms and pendants discussed in the report were not bulk vended
items, it is critical that all NBVA members educate themselves on this issue,
and attempt to keep cadmium out of their bulk vended jewelry and other items.

drill-resistant options for vending machines and bill changers. The
